Convened by UNITE-LA
The L.A. Compact has always championed local, state, and national policy shifts that support students and families in achieving success in education, careers, and in the community. Through policy and advocacy that approaches all points in the cradle-to-career pipeline, L.A. Compact partners have developed robust systems of aid by shifting policies and resource flows in the region. Examples include:
- Financial Aid
- SB 150 (2019) - Expands amounts available in Chafee Grants specifically for foster youth or former foster youth pursuing higher education
- AB 789 (2023) - Equitizes Satisfactory Academic Progress policies across the state, allowing more students to maintain aid while experiencing life events that may hinder academic progress
- Cal Grant
- AB 1746 (2021)/AB 1456 (2022)/Budget Act (2023+2024) - Reforms the Cal Grant Grant system to make more students of all ages eligible for Cal Grant and makes it easier to maintain that funding while earning a degree or credential
- Postsecondary Planning & Preparedness
- AB 469 (2021)
- AB 705 (2017)/ AB 1705 (2022)
- LAUSD Board Resolution - Got a Plan for That)
L.A. Compact partners and UNITE-LA staff also take part in numerous advisory boards and coalitions aimed at developing and interpreting policies to best support educational and career aspirations of youth and communities. UNITE-LA staff participated in the Undocumented Coalition, FIX financial aid Coalition, LA Resource Policy Hub, National College Attainment Network, Policy Advisory Committee, and the SoCal CAN Policy Committee.
