The L.A. Compact team would like to congratulate Dr. Michael Spagna on his appointment as interim president of Cal Poly Humboldt.
Dr. Spagna first engaged with the L.A. Compact as faculty at California State University, Northridge’s (CSUN) Michael D. Eisner School of Education. Upon his ascension to Dean of that school, Dr. Spagna took on a greater role in the Compact, becoming Chair of the Institutions of Higher Education Collaborative. As Chair, Michael oversaw the expansion of Compact initiatives, including the development of the Student Success Workgroup, where he served as a member; the L.A. Educator Pathways Partnership, where he provided expertise and resources from CSUN; and the Compact’s distinction as a National Talent Hub, spurred by a co-designed Reverse Transfer Partnership between CSUN and LACCD.
Following his time at CSUN, Dr. Spagna was appointed Provost at Cal State Dominguez Hills, strengthening the Compact partner institution’s overall academic direction. While serving as Provost, he also served as the Chair of the L.A. Compact Stewardship Group and supported UNITE-LA staff in devising and writing the refreshed Compact agreement released in 2021. Leveraging a decade of leadership with the L.A. Compact, Dr. Spagna also drove development of the L.A. Region K-16 Collaborative, helping to secure support from fellow CSU leaders and leaders from across segments of higher education.
We thank Dr. Spagna for his tireless work in improving the conditions for student success in Los Angeles. We look forward to seeing how he brings the spirit of the Compact to Northern California by prioritizing student and community education and career pathways in his interim role, and we look forward to seeing him in Southern California again soon!
