Welcome to the launch of the L.A. Compact's first bi-monthly newsletter!
Since 2008, the L.A. Compact has convened cross-sector stakeholders to work together across siloes in pursuit of three big, systemic goals:
- All students graduate from high school;
- All students have access to and are prepared for success in college; and
- All students have access to pathways to sustainable jobs and careers.
Today, 17 working groups (and counting!) are engaging hundreds of partners to improve cradle to career outcomes through the power of collective impact. We hope this newsletter will help shine a spotlight on this important collaborative work that seldom makes headlines. Each edition of The L.A. Compact Connection will include a short feature story, timely Compact workgroup or partner updates, and links to relevant news and research. We look forward to your feedback on how we can best utilize this newsletter to share the collective work of L.A. Compact partners.
Compact Signing Ceremony Brings Together UTLA and District Leaders
On December 14, the L.A. Compact hosted a Signing Ceremony at the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools Campus to welcome new signatories. Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Michelle King, United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) President Alex Caputo-Pearl, and Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Superintendent Debra Duardo became the newest signers of the Compact, uniting the district, its teachers, and greater Los Angeles civic leadership in a collaborative partnership to benefit public education. The event marked the first time in the nine year history of the L.A. Compact that UTLA joined as an official signatory.

WORKGROUP HIGHLIGHTS
The Los Angeles Educator Pathways Partnership (LAEPP) recently initiated its first data exchange between LAUSD and local higher education institutions in order to promote continuous improvement in teacher preparation programs. The exchange took place at the group's most recent meeting on February 1, marking the next major milestone in the partnership since the partners first signed their bilateral data sharing agreements in 2013. With renewed funding provided by the Bechtel Foundation, the partners will now turn their attention to data analysis to begin assessing and improving local teacher preparation pathways. LAEPP is a working group of the Compact's Institutions of Higher Education Collaborative.

UNITE-LA recently published Charting Progress Toward L.A. Compact Goals, tracking cradle-to-career student outcomes in the L.A. region. The report includes the latest available longitudinal data on a range of relevant indicators for LAUSD, L.A. County, and California, selectively disaggregated by race/ethnicity. Charting Progress serves as a tool for the L.A. Compact and community to improve our education systems change efforts. To roll out the report and bring attention to recent student trends, the L.A. Compact held it's first Data Walk on December 12. Members of the Compact's 17 workgroups and other community leaders engaged with report findings at various poster stations, discussing data interpretations and implications with experts from the L.A. Compact Data Workgroup.

The Foster Youth College Advancement Project (FYCAP) launched in January 2017 as a new workgroup within the L.A. Opportunity Youth Collaborative (OYC). John Burton Advocates for Youth and UNITE-LA are co-convening the workgroup to improve college readiness, access, and postsecondary attainment for foster youth. The FYCAP workgroup met on January 19 to explore ways to engage foster parents and caregivers in regional efforts that increase direct college enrollment and expand financial aid access for foster youth. The partners also shared updates on two new partnerships between the Children's Law Center and the Edelman's Children's Court, and between L.A. Cash for College, the DCFS Independent Living Program, and local community colleges that engage child welfare partners in providing direct FAFSA assistance to foster youth.
